Vision in the Feathers

Acrylic on canvases, 18″ x 24″

One of the most hidden and ongoing crisis in Canada is the destruction of aboriginal culture, way of life, and rights to basic necessities that other Canadians (including immigrants) have. Like a badge of honour, every single feather in a headdress represents wisdom and acts of leadership that were experienced, taught, and passed down by whomever was elected to wear it.   This is the traditional meaning that cultural appropriation (in the form of costumes) fails to uphold.

Vision in the Feathers is my abstract interpretation of the richness that colonialism destroys when it overtakes people and cultures–not just in Canada but all over the world, even in the smallest of gestures.

When wearing a piece of culture, we might need ask ourselves about our intentions and ask whether it is justified: am I paying homage or am I being careless?
